Our Action PlanRape is when an individual is forced into or threatened into unlawful sexual activity. The topic has been discussed about a lot. Every time a rape case is highlighted or reported, people talk and discuss about who was wrong or right but no one attempts to understand the real cause of such activities, and without knowing the problem no one can provide solutions to it. We as a group will find out the reasons behind rape and different situations in which it happens. After doing so, we will try to find out solutions to these core problems and try to devise proper prevention methods for these core problems.

RAPE : An extremely crucial issue un-addressed.
According to the police, the child, a nursery student, was molested inside the school premises over four days. “There is a gent’s and ladies’ toilet on either side of the victim’s classroom. The victim’s mother said that her daughter was assaulted in the toilets. The ‘maushi’ (female attendant) sometimes allows female students to use the boys’ toilet. If there is any male member inside the toilet, she waits for him to come out first. The mother claimed that the child came home looking exhausted during the four days,” said the investigating officer in the case. He also added that they were trying to ascertain if it was the case was of rape or sexual assault. The peon was identified by the child when he was brought to Dindoshi police station for questioning.

Under Indian law, police officers who fail to register a complaint of sexual assault face up to two years in prison. However, Human Rights Watch found that police did not always file a First Information Report (FIR), the first step to initiating a police investigation, especially if the victim was from an economically or socially marginalized community. In several cases, the police resisted filing the FIR or pressured the victim’s family to “settle” or “compromise,” particularly if the accused was from a powerful family or community. |
State healthcare systems have largely failed to provide therapeutic care and counseling to rape survivors. This includes advice on access to safe abortions and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. |
Marital rape is when a man has sex with his wife without her consent or forces his wife to have sex with him. Just as domestic violence is punishable by law, so should be domestic sexual abuse. Rape is rape, it’s no different whether done by husband or a stranger. By the end of the 20th century, most of the developed nations had criminalized marital rape, but India still hasn’t. The excuse of poverty and an array of outdated social and religious customs have always been used to stall legal reforms in India. Is poverty or lack of education a justification for a husband to sexually abuse his wife? Sati too was once an acceptable and prevalent cultural practice in India. But, domestic violence is a criminal offence now. Does marriage justify or empower a husband, does it give him a right over his wife? It is used as an ownership right over a woman’s body, her sexuality and her reproductive functioning. Calling sex after marriage a “wifely duty” has to stop. Any form of sexual intercourse has to be based on mutual consent and pleasure, not forced . these cases go unreported as marital rape, as per the Indian Penal Code, is not an offence.

On A Broader Topic
India's law should recognise that men can be raped too. As Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code stands, rape is something that only a man can do to a woman. There is no room for adult male victims, much less female perpetrators. Although child survivors of both sexes are covered by the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, current rape laws leave out a large swathe of male victims, who cannot come forward for fear of stigma and a lack of legal recourse |
Why rape is not 'sex' and survivors don't 'confess' Stories have mattered. Media coverage helps inform our view of the world, and cements – or challenges – social attitudes. Rightly or wrongly, much like the parables of old, news and media stories can carry the weight of lessons. |
INTERVIEWS
Interview 1
1. How can we begin conversations about these very sensitive issues without alienating people further?
->we live in a society that is still confused as to what makes a rapist and what constitutes a rape. The attitude towards rape in our society is absolutely abhorrent and it is shocking that people who claim to be so progressive and intelligent cannot find solutions to this problem.. This is a topic that needs to be discussed. Communication is necessary to move forward.. Conversations about sexual assault involving women have been passive stilted or altogether hushed.
2.How can we better help those victims who are reluctant to report and seek help?
->Victims don't report assault to the police as they don't want anyone to know as reporting rape comes with all social risk. Further there is a feeling that nobody will believe them. To help these victims... believe the victim unconditionally. Accept without judgement. Be a good listener and be patient. Let the victim know you are there for her when she is ready to talk. Help the victim regain a sense of control over her life. Provide her a sense of protection and also reinforcing her that rape was not her fault. Help her in understanding that reporting to police can help victims recover from the abuse and further it will help preventing an offender from abusing someone else.
[8:46 PM, 12/24/2017] Amma: Women are more likely to report rape if female police officers are available . In our country only 7% of police officers are women and they are frequently given posts that don't involve patrol duty.. When women do report rape charges to make officers they are often demeaned.
3.what do you think the cause of all this is ?
-> Our society has fewer policemen to protect ordinary citizens. Almostval the officers are dedicated to provide protection services to politicians, bureaucrats, diplomats etc. Many people who perform police duties simply look the other way as crimes take place. People in India blame the victims of wearing provocative clothing citing it as the reason for increased case of sexual assault. Domestic violence in houses is also an cause as when a boy sees his father assault his mother, he starts to accept such a behavior and repeats it. Women generally are not protected outside their homes. Many streets are poorly lit and there is lack of women toilets. Women who drink Nd smoke or go to pubs are seen as morally loose. A sluggish judiciary system which takes years to solve a case and there is no law covering the sexual harassment called eve teasing. Further in our country especially in rural India status of woman has been very low.
4.What is it about our society that makes rape one of the fastest growing violent crimes in this country?
->Rape is on the rise in India as only an few get punished for the crime. As stated earlier our society being a male dominated, the status of women has been very low. Women in conflict areas such as Jammu and Kashmir. Jharkhand, Chattisgarh as well as vulnerable women, including Dalit or Tribal women were often victims of rape.Education is abysmal for girls. Due to ingrained sexism many parents don't send their daughters to school after they attain puberty.Due to lack of sex education in schools o at the family level is the foremos reason for rape as this makes teenagers Curious about the sex changes taking place in their bodies and in order to know this they tend to resort to the unethical ways that generate their desires at the right time thus lead-in them towards a crime rape. 90% of the female don't even know the self defense techniques which may enable them to fight against the evils. Making laws in India is easy than implementing the laws made for women. Even after 71years of independence the judicial system itself is not strengthened, their courts don't always do justice for the victims and find rapists guilty for ridiculous reasons. Sinners know this andbtake advantage of it. Even if they get caught,if they have money or influence, nothing will happen to them. A woman would have to turn the rape case into a media circus to have a chance at justice and 90% of rape victims in India would not do so out of fear and shame.
5.What do you think is the best punishment for this violation
->The topmost take is to make the conviction rate higher by way of better investigation and also ensure speedier justice so that rapists know they will be punished sooner than later. Setting up of fast track courts for crimes against woman in every state, city, town and villages is a must. The government should earmark the necessary financial and manpower resources for these courts and announce a time frame for setting them up. Although there is growing awareness and reporting of sexual violence, men are not able to accept Women's increasing assertiveness and use heinous ways to punish them.
6.What can be done to avoid all this
->6 attitude to women and recognition if their full range of rights should be linked to recruitment, promotion. The system should recognize a good police officer, a good magistrate, a good prosecutor by their attitudes to women victims. Also penalise their discriminatory behavior. Equality training should be implemented in various spheres in schools. Teach women they are equal and they are more likely to be treated that way. Self defense should be taught in every schools. Boys should also be given empathy training to show them what it is like to be a girl. Anger management courses should also be introduced in schools. Allowing women to see for money damages and injunctions in civil cases would help to go along with criminal cases.
7.why do you think people are so ignorant about discussing such topics
->Lack of education and sensitivity towards problems faced by females are the tow basic cause of ignorance. Our society still feels that girls are a burden and if anything wrong happens its always the girl who is blamed and men go scot free. The treatment of women as unequal in all spheres of life and the thinking of male supremacy are also the causes of ignorance.

Interview 2
1. Education is the basic importance which every human being deserves and also needs it. Protection of every girl is something which has become a necessity in the world. Girls around the world are petrified to even shake hands with the opposite sex and no one feels safe even at home. Girls safety and behaviour of men are something which can be learnt from nearby people and proper education.
2. It is important to make the victims feel that people around them are not judgemental and only want to understand their problems for better solution. Due to such inhuman behaviour, the victims become vulnerable and weak. We have to become their strength and make them feel that they are not alone.
3. The patriarchal system is the root cause. The attitude of males that they can get away with it leads to such terrible behaviour of them towards females.
4. Men considering that they are far more superior then women is one of the main reasons. There are not strict rape laws which has turned into a motivation for males.
5. Capital punishment is the only solution for these pathetic rapists.
6. People saying that girls should stop going out after 7 PM or shouldn't wear 'inappropriate' dresses when stepping out of their home are definitely not the solution which the world needs.
Instead, you should tell males how to behave with girls.
7. Our society is patriarchal, which is the root cause of all the issues. Whenever rape victims talk about their incidents, it becomes easy for people around to question her character and blames everything on her. If a daughter gets raped, it's a shameful thing for her parents but I'd a man rapes a female, no one blames him for life like how they do for the females.

Interview 3
1. The topic of rape is very controversial and has to be dealt with lots of care. Sex Education should made compulsory . The topic has to be dealt with care and sensitivity. Counselling should be available for girls at school, work place and all other walks of life, where there have to be female counsellors and counselling should be made easily available. Rape should not be sensitivatived nor made a taboo. Girls and women should be encouraged to talk more freely about rape molestation. Awareness about the same should spread by conduction street shows, radio, . etc.
2. Even today women are reluctant to report rape The matter is should be dealt with sensitivity. The reported case should be investigated with care and lots of secrecy. All reported cases should be handed with utmost care and top priority should be given towards solving these cases. Women constables and inspectors should handle these cases and the matter should be handled sensitively and the rape victims should be not subject to indigenous investigation. Such victims should not be judged and their morals should not be questioned.
3. Male domination is the basic cause of rape cases in India. Another cause of increase in rape cases is the lack of education of girls. Our patrichical society and the feeling that men can get away with anything are also the causes of increase in rape cases in India.
4. The facts that even today girls are discriminated in all fields of life at even metro cities right from their time of birth. We do not teach our girls self defence. They are told to bear everything cause its felt that otherwise they will bring shame to the family. Lack of proper law and order and justice system also is another cause of increase in rape case. The male female ratio of birth also contributes to increase in rape.
5. Capital punishment is the only punishments. Offenders of all age group sold be tried as adults and given capital punishment. Also justice should be fast and swift and the cases should not drag long. There should be no appeal against any judgement offered against rapist.
6. People should not judge girls by the way they dress or behave. Instead boys should be asked to protect any girls who irrespective of whether they are friends or strangers. Solutions To Prevent Rapes
When a person is forced into sexual activity without consent of themselves by another individual, that is rape. It does not only torment an individual physically, but mentally. the trauma they experience is beyond imagination.
So what can we, as people, do to reduce the amount of this crime taking place?
To come up with solutions to the problem, people have to talk about it. one of the main concerns is that nobody ever wants to talk about the problem that is rape. Yes, it is a sensitive issue and not easy to talk about, but until people in this country don’t talk about it nothing will ever change.
so we have thought of a few ways we can tackle this problem, that may decrease the amount of rapes in the future.

Talking about it to your children is not wrong. The future of this country should know that rape is not something to joke about and is a serious issue. And that is why changing the mindset of people from the very beginning of their lives is important. One of the ways to do this is to include sex education in the education system of this country. Talking about sex should not be considered a taboo. People should be open to the idea of talking about sex to teenagers so that they don't commit such crimes and probably start doing something to curb this issue. Male rape is something nobody talks about. Nobody even believes that is a possible crime. Well it is. They are also beings and can be raped. It may be lesser compared to female rapes but it exists. To curb this issue first people need to know what it is and then laws should be applied on the same. |
Some people out there have the idea that rape is wrong but some justify it. Inflicting fear in these people is one way to reduce this issue taking place. The punishment for rape in this country is not of justice. |
